‘Horizon 2020’ programme launched in Athens

On Friday, 10 January 2014, the new European Programme for Research and Innovation ‘Horizon 2020’ was launched at the National Centre for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’. The event was organized by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology in the context of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU during the first half of 2014.

Greek Minister of Education, Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos addressed the event and also met with European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn.

“The new Programme for Research and Innovation ‘Horizon 2020’ is one of the tools of the EU, expected to contribute to tackling the crisis through the development of a “knowledge-based economy” and the strengthening of the competitive advantages of the Union on a global scale, with the aim of consolidating top ranking positions among the world “players” in Science and Technology,” stressed the minister in his opening remarks.

The event was also addressed by European Commissioners Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, responsible for Research, Innovation and Science, and Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
