Third European Union - League of Arab States Foreign Affairs Ministerial Meeting adopts Declaration

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the European Union (EU) and of the League of Arab States (LAS) gathered in Athens, on 10-11 June, for the Third Ministerial Meeting between the EU and LAS.

Important agreement on the new nuclear safety Directive achieved

A commonly accepted, by the member states and the European Commission, agreement on the text amending the Community framework for nuclear safety (2009/71/EURATOM) was endorsed today by the Permanent Representatives Committee of the Council. The agreement for this new Directive was reached under the Greek Presidency, after delicate and strenuous negotiation, since the safety of nuclear installations is for member states an important matter of national sovereignty.

First World War: Europe looks into its past through Europeana

Europe commemorates this year the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918) – a watershed in the continent’s history that ushered it into what Eric Hobsbawm has termed “the short twentieth century”. This was a war that tore Europe apart, as no European nation was left untouched.  But it was the ordinary men and women who were affected the most.

Greek Presidency reaches agreement on Data Protection, Insolvency (Luxembourg, 06.06.2014)

During the last formal Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council under the Greek Presidency, EU Justice Ministers achieved a partial general approach on the Data Protection Regulation. The Council also agreed on a Regulation modernising cross-border insolvency rules and on strengthening procedural safeguards for children involved in criminal proceedings. The meeting on 6 June in Luxembourg was chaired by Greek Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights, Charalampos Athanasiou.
