Celebrating the contemporary Greek cinema in Brussels: four months of movie screening in Cinematek and Bozar (March – June 2014)

Ιn crisis-hit Greece, young filmmakers grab attention and provoke discussions at international festivals, creating a tendency that has been described by some as the Greek 'new wave' in cinema. The plethora of emerging artists are seeking personal ways to talk about contemporary Greek reality and a society in transition through movies that often receive international acclaim and find their way into European cinemas.

A large part of this contemporary film production will be presented at a panoramic festival from March to June in Brussels, in the context of the Greek presidency of the Council of the European Union. The festival will be hosted by two of the most important cultural institutions in Belgium: Bozar and Cinematek are joining forces in the common venture of presenting modern Greek filmography at the multinational public of Europe’s capital.

The film festival, organised by Cinematek in collaboration with the Greek Film Archive and with the support of the Greek ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs, starts with the screening of eight Greek films not previously shown in Belgium, from 4-9 March at Cinematek and the Bozar cinema. Most films will be projected in the presence of the director and will be rounded off by a master class given by the renowned film critic Michel Demopoulos.

Among others, films of internationally acclaimed Greek director Theo Angelopoulos will be screened at a retrospective organised in March-April at the Cinematek, one of the oldest and most important film foundations worldwide.

Other directors featuring in the film festival are: Panayotopoulou, Tsitos, Kornilios, Flessa, Tsangari, Sakaridis, Stathoulopoulos, Lanthimos, Tzoumerkas, Hughes/Koutsospyrou, Makridis, Koutras, Smaragdis,Georgousis, Lygizos, Demopoulos, Koutsaftis, Patroni, Economides, Yannakakis/Karabatsou, Stefani, Voulgari, Karakepelis, Theodorakis, Anastopoulos, Karamaghiolis, Koutsiabassakos, Papadimitropoulos/Vogel
