Seminar: "Gender based violence in Sport: minors protection"

Thursday, 20 March 2014

Zappeion Megaron, Athens

Through this seminar titled “Gender based violence, minors’ protection” the Presidency aims to contribute to one of the most sensitive, complicated and difficult aspects of the issue of gender equality in sport.  It constitutes a social phenomenon, the components of which interact in such a complicated way that it deters even the most willing.

Greece figures among the European States that felt the need to tackle the problem by various means including raising public awareness, through seminars and research.

On 20 March, scientists and sport leaders from all European Union member states, together with some of the most prominent international sport movement bodies will attempt to:

  • Outline a legal framework
  • Share best practices and methods from each participant’s perspective
  • Provide insight for the most adequate international registration system, allowing prevention and monitoring of the overall situation, while conforming to the data protection legislation.
  • Build upon the 2013 Vilnius Call for Strategic Actions
  • Promote the issue as one of the priority areas for action, identified as such by the “Strategy for gender equality 2010-2015” (adopted by the European Commission in 2010).

The seminar aspires to produce concrete proposals on gender equality in sport, to be adopted by the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council of the EU (22 May).
