SMEs and cities of the future: Informal Council for Cohesion Policy (Athens, 24-25.4.2014)

An Informal Meeting of EU Ministers responsible for Cohesion Policy, is taking place in Athens, on 24-25 April, organised by the Ministry of Development and Competitiveness.

The main topic on the agenda is support to SMEs. In particular, discussions will focus on liquidity and access to financing for SMEs, simplification of their access to public funds, as well as improvement of the business environment in which they operate with the support of Structural funds and other instruments.

DPM and FM Venizelos’ statement on the agreement reached at the quadrilateral meeting (U.S., Russia, EU, Ukraine) in Geneva on Ukraine

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos made the following statement on behalf of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union:

“The points agreed on in Geneva are an important first step toward de-escalating the situation and shaping the conditions for overcoming the crisis in Ukraine.

What is important now is the conscientious implementation of everything agreed upon, so that a climate of trust and a sense of security can be restored on all levels.”

EP adopts proposal for a Directive on conditions of entry and residence of third-country nationals in the framework of an intra-corporate transfer

On 15 April 2014, the Plenary of the European Parliament approved the Report on the proposal for a Directive of the EP and the Council on the conditions of entry and residence of third-country nationals in the framework of intra-corporate transfer presented by the competent Rapporteur and member of the LIBE Committee, Salvatore Iacolino.

Thumbs up for Banking Union: EP adopts key texts

The European Parliament, in today’s plenary session, adopted 3 key texts that complete the legislative work underpinning the Banking Union (Single Resolution Mechanism, Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive, and Deposit Guarantee Schemes Directive).

The process of drafting a broader EU Maritime Security Strategy presented by DPM and FM Venizelos before the AFET Committee in Strasbourg (14.4.2014)

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos presented before the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) in Strasbourg yesterday (14 April 2014) the developments in the process of drafting an EU Maritime Security Strategy.

Minister Venizelos said, inter alia: “Our aim is for the EU Maritime Security Strategy to broaden the so far one-dimensional perspective of maritime security, which is now somehow military and police oriented, by including the following:

Greek Presidency achievements to date presented by DPM and FM Venizelos before the AFET Committee in Strasbourg (14.4.2014)

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos presented before the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) in Strasbourg yesterday (14 April 2014) the basic legislative achievements to date of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU.

EU Defence ministers discuss Maritime Security Policy, Central African Republic & Ukraine

Defence ministers will meet today (15 April 2014) from 9.30 (CET) onwards, first as the European Defence Agency Steering Board, chaired by the High Representative as Head of the Agency.

The Council will convene from 10.30 (CET) and hear presentations on the proposed EU Maritime Security Strategy and the launch of the EU military operation in the Central African Republic.

G20 Meeting in Washington: Greek Presidency supports efforts to foster growth and employment

The G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting took place on 10-11 April in Washington D.C. back-to-back with the World Bank – IMF Spring Meetings 2014. Representing the Council of the EU, the Greek Presidency delegation was leaded by Christina Papaconstantinou, Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance.

Syria, Ukraine & Bosnia and Herzegovina on the FAC’s agenda (Monday, 14 April, Luxembourg)

The EU Foreign Affairs Council starts Monday 14 April at 12.30 (CET) and will be chaired by Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. 
 
The Council will assess developments in Ukraine, as well as EU-Russia relations, while over lunch, ministers will discuss developments related to the crisis in Syria and hold an in-depth exchange on Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The Council is set to adopt conclusions on these three items. The Middle East peace process and the recent elections in Afghanistan are also on the Council’s agenda.
