Last ENVI Council to take place in Luxembourg (12.06.2014)

The last under Greek Presidency Environment Council, chaired by Greek Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Yiannis Maniatis, is taking place in Luxembourg on 12 June. The Council is expected to reach political agreement on a draft directive amending directive 2001/18/EC as regards the possibility for member states to restrict or prohibit the cultivation of genetically modified organisms within their territory.

Blue growth, climate change and energy package at the Informal Council Meeting of EU Environment Ministers

An Informal Council of EU Environment Ministers, chaired by Greek Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Yannis Maniatis, convened today (14.5.2014) in Athens. Commissioners for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard, and Environment Janez Potočnik, participated at the meeting, along with the competent Ministers of Member States, candidate countries (including almost all Balkan countries) and countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

New regulation to ensure technical implementation of the Kyoto Protocol

The Council's Permanent Representatives Committee today approved the compromise reached between the Council and the European Parliament concerning a regulation amending Regulation No 525/2013 as regards the technical implementation of the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. It thereby endorsed the agreement reached on 17 March between the Greek Presidency of the Council and representatives of the European Parliament.

Protecting our ecosystem from invasive alien species

The Permanent Representatives Committee of the Council today (19.3.2014) approved a compromise text provisionally agreed between the Greek Presidency of the Council and the European Parliament on a draft regulation on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species. It thereby endorsed the agreement reached between the Presidency of the Council and representatives of the European Parliament on 5 March.

The Council's Permanent Representatives Committee today approved the compromise reached between the Council and the European Parliament concerning an updated regulation on shipment of waste. It thereby endorsed the agreement reached on 6 March between the Greek Presidency of the Council and representatives of the European Parliament.

Agreement reached to amend Emissions Trading Scheme for aviation (7.3.2014)

The Permanent Representatives Committee endorsed today (7.3.2014) the agreement reached between the Presidency of the Council and representatives of the European Parliament on 4 March, regarding a draft regulation amending the EU Emissions trading scheme (ETS) directive (2003/87/EC), in view of the implementation by 2020 of an international agreement applying a single global market-based measure to international aviation emissions.
