Informal EPSCO (Employment) Council (Athens, 29-30.04.2014)

Employment and Social Policy Ministers are convening in Athens on 29 April 2014, for a two-day informal meeting to discuss labour market reforms and social policies on the way to job-rich recovery and exchange views on measures to prevent undeclared work.

Informal Meeting of EU Health Ministers (Athens, 28-29.04.2014)

Greek Health Minister, Spyridon-Adonis Georgiadis, will host the Informal Meeting of the European Ministers of Health, on 28-29 April 2014, at Zappeion Megaron in Athens.

The Ministers will have the opportunity to discuss a number of very important health issues for EU citizens and the sustainability of health systems.

e-Health: Better resource allocation for better healthcare across Europe

Making the case for women’s empowerment in Europe’s ICT sector

While it is a fact that after the digital revolution more and more people increasingly turn to digital jobs and the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry in the European Union shows a positive growth of about 120,000 new jobs per year, technology companies face a critical shortfall of talented ICT experts. This contradictory picture reveals a mismatch between the skills on offer and those in demand in today's fast developing technology market.

Tripartite Social Summit highlights EU’s social dimension

EU’s social partners joined European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras (representing the rotating EU presidency) at The Tripartite Social Summit held today (20.3.2014) ahead of the Spring EU Council.

The Summit focused on the launching of the Strategy “Europe 2020” and agreed on the need for further collective efforts to pursue sustainable economic growth, while ensuring social cohesion and quality employment.

Making tobacco products less attractive, especially to young people: Council adopts revised EU tobacco directive

The Council approved yesterday (14.3.2014) a revised EU tobacco directive that it is expected to enter into force in May, 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. Member states will then have two years to transpose the directive into their national laws, and will have to apply the new rules from the end of this period.

The European Semester, Europe 2020 Strategy, youth employment and Youth Guarantee related issues and a Quality Framework for Traineeship, the focus of EPSCO Council

EU Employment and Social Affairs Ministers discussed at an EPSCO Council meeting today (10.3.2014) under the Greek Presidency, the European Semester, Europe 2020 Strategy, youth employment and Youth Guarantee related issues and adopted a Recommendation on a Quality Framework for Traineeship.

The first session of the EPSCO Council under the Greek Presidency took place today, (10.3.2014) in Brussels, chaired by the Greek Minister of Labour, Social Security and Welfare, Ioannis Vroutsis.

Employment and Social Policy Issues to be discussed at the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council

The Council meeting, starting at 10.00 (CET), will be chaired by Mr Ioannis VROUTSIS, minister for Employment, Social Protection and Welfare of Greece.

The Council will be called on to agree in principle on a decision on the tripartite social summit for growth and employment.

The Council is due to adopt a recommendation on a quality framework for traineeships.

It will hold a policy debate on the employment and social policy aspects of the 2014 European Semester exercise, adopting relevant documents.

EU-wide survey calls for concrete action to end violence against women

For many people, violence against women is an intolerable behaviour taking place behind closed doors, in troubled personal relationships between underprivileged people with poor education and limited opportunities to improve their lives. But such a claim could not be furthest from truth. Violence against women is a classless phenomenon that permeates all social strata and appears to be challenging various stereotypes we might be holding true.

Posting of workers: agreement for greater legal certainty and transparency

The Permanent Representatives Committee approved today a compromise text on an enforcement directive regarding the posting of workers, provisionally agreed between the Greek Presidency of the Council and the European Parliament.

Parliament's employment and social affairs committee is expected to approve the compromise text in March and the Parliament at first reading in its plenary session in April.

The Council will then formally adopt the directive at a later stage.
