Annual Growth Survey 2014, European Research Area and Space Policy, the focus of COMPET Council

Today Friday, 21 February 2014, the first Competitiveness Council/Research and Space part, during the Greek Presidency of the European Council, was held here in Brussels. The Council was chaired by the Secretary General for Research and Technology of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs Dr Christos Vasilakos.

The main Agenda items, discussed today, were the Annual Growth Survey 2014, the European Research Area (ERA) progress report, and issues related to Space Policy and the frame of cooperation between the European Union and the European Space Agency.

COMPET Council meeting – Day 2 (21.02.2014)

On the second day of the COMPET, the Council will hold a debate on the research and innovation aspects in relation to the Annual Growth Survey for 2014. Following the first report on the progress towards the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA), the Council will be invited to adopt conclusions on key elements that will contribute to the completion of the ERA. In the afternoon, the Council will exchange views on how to better develop the relationship between the EU and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Regaining European industry competitiveness, the focus of COMPET Council

The Competitiveness Council of Ministers of the European Union, chaired by Kostis Hatzidakis, Minister for Development and Competitiveness of the Hellenic Republic, met in Brussels, on 20 February. The main item on the agenda of the Council was the competitiveness of European industry.

Safety of pressure equipment in the internal market

On 12 February 2014, the Committee of Permanent Representatives endorsed an agreement between the Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European Parliament on a draft directive aimed at reinforcing and simplifying the market surveillance for the freemovement of pressure equipment in the internal market.

Coreper agreement on protection of satellites and space infrastructures

The Committee of Permanent Representatives today (5.2.2014) endorsed an agreement between the Greek Presidency of the Council and European Parliament representatives with a view to establishing a European surveillance and tracking service (SST) aimed at enhancing the security of space infrastructures and the safety of satellite operations.

The SST support framework will be complementary to related activities carried out under Union programmes such as ‘Horizon 2020’, ‘Copernicus’ and
‘Galileo’.

Electronic invoicing in public procurement

On 21 January, the Greek Presidency brought the negotiations on a new directive aimed at spreading the use of new technologies in public tenders to a successful conclusion following a number of technical meetings and two informal trilogues with the responsible committee in the Parliament (the internal market committee "IMCO") and the Commission.

Industrial Policy a basic priority of the Greek Presidency in the area of Competitiveness

The Greek Presidency notes with satisfaction today's announcement of the European Commission in Brussels, in which the Commission urges Member States to promptly recognise the importance of Industry for development and the creation of jobs in the EU and of incorporating the dimension of industrial competitiveness in all policy areas.

Greek Presidency priorities presented before EP ITRE, REGI and IMCO Committees

In his presentation to ITRE Committee, Minister Hatzidakis focused on maintaining and promoting the dialogue for a new Industrial Policy for the EU. It is indicative, in this respect, that in both the European Council of March 2014 and the informal Ministerial Competitiveness Council to be held in Athens on 12-13 May 2014, Industrial Policy will be in the spotlight.

Α Research & Innovation kick-off event on the ‘Horizon 2020’ programme

‘Horizon 2020’, the new European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, will be presented by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) at a special event organised in the framework of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU, on Friday, 10 January 2014, at the ‘Demokritos’  National Centre for Scientific Research.

The event is under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias, who will attend it.
